What I was listening to in 1988: Yazz – The Only Way is Up
Picture a twelve-year-old me. My favourite outfit was a bubble skirt with pedal pushers underneath, cropped top, and a neon scrunchie in my hair. I was obsessed with big crazy earrings – the bigger, bolder the better.
Sunday nights I’d tune in to Radio One to listen to the countdown to see who would be number one that week with my pop culture bible at my side, Smash Hits Magazine. The best thing about Smash Hits was that it published the lyrics of pretty much every single song that would be on the top 40, and I memorized them all.
One of my favourites in 1988 was Yazz. I loved her style so much and even collected tabs from Pepsi and Irn Bru cans to add to make my own jean jacket inspired by her. She is still awesome. That jacket I made? Well, that didn’t survive past one wear.
