Passion For Fashion Information Sessions – Free business program for fashion entrepreneurs

As most of you probably know, in my part time I coordinate a program at the Youth Employment Services YES, which is a partnership with the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) called Passion For Fashion. It’s a partially government-funded program through the Ministry of Ontario’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program and is completely free for anyone aged 16 – 29 to attend.

There have been so many incredibly talented people come through the program and who are now on a successful career in the fashion industry. One of those people was Kevin Nualls who was my introduction to the program when I was just a mentor; now Kevin is the associate online editor of Toronto Life – read all his witty posts over at

Other successful PFF Alumi include Bonnie Yam of Roxx (Passion For Fashion Award winner 2011), Wes Meisner, Emily Woudenberg (Passion For Fashion Award winner 2012), Dylan Uscher of Dylanium Knits (Eveleen Dollery Award winner 2012), Karen Welcome of Sway Magazine, Kallvis Gents of Nordem Hirst, Michelle Carey, Andy Jones, and many more.

I highly recommend anyone who is able to take the program. Here’s why:

  • It’s FREE! (How amazing is that?)
  • Not only are the workshops a great way to help you figure out how to put together a business plan – either to update your current one, create one for your emerging business, or to keep on file for a future business venture – it’s a great way to network with peers and build a support system.
  • Many previous attendees have remained close friends after the program.
  • It’s not just for fashion designers – any one who is interested in starting their own fashion related business can take the program – and you don’t need to be looking to open one right now; the skills you learn in the workshops can be applied 5, 10, 15 years down the road.
  • The mentorships are invaluable to your career, not only for advice, but also for building long-lasting relationships.
  • Some amazingly influential and experience guest speakers have come into our offices and given wonderful talks, including FLARE Magazine’s editor-in-chief/associate publisher Lisa Tant and internationally renowned fashion designer Jeremy Laing!
  • And so many more reasons…
